Allegheny County 1/28 and 1/29

Al's Cafe, Bethel Park, 1/28: What is mulligatawny?

The waitress told me it was Irish. The Internet does not seem to concur: "The soup is an Anglo-Indian concoction of curry, rice, apples, and chicken. It's also rich and creamy, 'cuz ya add heavy cream to the broth." Apples in soup is certainly different, but in a good way.

Half Price Books, McKnight Road, 1/29: I find it difficult to believe that this genre requires an entire shelf.

Green Tree 9/03: Get That Blue Coffee

Green Tree, 9/03.

It exists. Waitresses will get sketchy and change the subject when you mention it. They'll try and tell you it's disinfectant. I don't think so. It's blue coffee, and you aren't allowed to have any. Why? I don't know. Maybe it's a Masonic thing. So next time you are in a restaurant and you spot blue coffee around the kitchen corner, give the manager a firm handshake and a look in the eye, cough out the name "Tubal Cane" a few times or throw up the Masonic gang sign if you know it. It can't hurt. You may just get a swig of blue coffee and you can tell the rest of us how it tastes. I'm sure it's awesome.
